Today in Leinster House: January 13, 2012

It’s the first Friday sitting of the month, which means it’s time for the monthly session dedicated to back-bench and opposition legislation.

10:30am – Local Authority (Public Administration) Bill (second stage) – This relatively straightforward piece of legislation, put forward by Fianna Fáil’s Niall Collins, is a simple act which would require local authorities to issue a written acknowledgement of a letter within a certain time of it being received. Unless the query is ‘trivial’ or ‘vexatious’, a council has five days to acknowledge the query, and 20 days to issue a comprehensive response (or to explain the delay). Complaints under this system would be made to the Ombudsman.

Debate continues until 1:30pm; if a vote is called, it will be taken on Tuesday.

The day’s business can be viewed on our Dáil streams for web and Facebook.
