Today in Leinster House: April 23, 2012
It gets a lot of stick for its workrate but this week the Seanad is putting in a five-day week, in order to wrap up the Fiscal Compact discussions as well as to finish the Oireachtas’ consideration of the Social Welfare Bill.
2:30pm – Order of Business – The day begins with the usual 75-minute discussion of what the rest of the day should be spent on, with Senators having enough time to discuss the various issues of the day in doing so. l
3:45pm – Thirtieth Amendment of the Constitution (Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union) Bill 2012 (second stage) – The whole point of the Monday sitting is to get rid of the Fiscal Compact legislation, formally allowing it to be put to a public vote. Sinn Féin opposed it in the Dáil, but it will be interesting to see if any of the non-party members try to block it in the Seanad.
6:00pm – Matters on the Adjournment – With that bit taken care of, the day is brought to a quiet ending with members getting a chance to discuss some of the miscellaneous matters of the day.
All of the day’s business can be viewed on our Seanad streams for web and Facebook.
