Today in Leinster House: July 27, 2011
As Madonna, Cliff Richard, Will Smith and Mungo Jerry all said in miscellaneous ways: Holiday.
Let’s get to it.
9:30am – Jobs, Social Protection and Education – Putting on its education hat, the committee considers plans left behind by the old government which would see the number of VECs almost halved through mergers.
10:00am – Order of Business – The final carte blanche of the week should see some crackers.
11:15am – Criminal Justice Bill 2011, committee and remaining stages – Alan Shatter’s bill will probably have sat well overnight, but in case anyone wakes up with some regrets, they’ll have 105 minutes to clear their consciences.
1:30pm – Criminal Justice (Community Service) (Amendment) (No.2) Bill 2011, committee and remaining stages – Likewise, if anyone had any issues about replacing short jail sentences with community service, let them speak now or forever hold their peace.
3:30pm – Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2011, Dáil amendments – A couple of procedural amendments from the Dáil should be enough to see the Seanad pass through another miscellaneous bill.
4pm – Motion on the Report by Commission of Investigation into Catholic Diocese of Cloyne – While little will probably match the ferocious oratory of Enda Kenny’s Dáil contributions last week, Senators will surely have some worthy pieces to contribute.
6pm – Private Members’ Business: Family Home Bill 2011 [Fianna Fáil] – The final PMB of the term will see Fianna Fáil propose a draft bill which would bar the repossession of family homes unless the family has shown itself to be completely unwilling or able to keep up its mortgage repayments.
8:00pm – Matters on the Adjournment – The final four random topics get an airing on the public record before the final whistle blows on the 24th Seanad’s first term.
As always, the week’s business can be viewed on our live Seanad stream. Links to the live streams of each committee meeting can be found by clicking into the details of that meeting on our interactive Committees calendar.
